Visiting the island of Sal as part of the celebrations for the day of St. Anthony, Patron of the Parish of Espargos, the Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Dom Ildo Fortes, paid a courtesy visit to the mayor of Salense, Júlio Lopes, this morning, June 11, accompanied by the parish priests Adriano da Luz Batista, Paróquia dos Espargos, and Benvindo Lopes Rodrigues, Parish of Santa Maria.
“It is always a great pleasure to welcome you and your delegation here in Paços do Concelho, because we understand that the visit of a Bishop to the Municipality is always important and a reason for joy and rejoicing, especially when commemorating such an important anniversary as it's Santo António's Day”, emphasized Edil Júlio Lopes, assuring the Bishop that the current administration of the Municipality of Sal has a people-centred vision of development of the island, and therefore it is not only concerned with carrying out the works, that involve the paving of roads, construction of pedestrians and other infrastructures, naturally important for the well-being of populations and communities, but also with issues related to the education of children and young people, social action, inclusion and social cohesion, as well as with the part of the spirituality of the citizens.
On his turn, the Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Dom Ildo Fortes, expressed his satisfaction at the ready availability of Edil and his team to receive him in the Town Hall, taking the opportunity to personally congratulate him on his re-election, underlining that there is a widespread perception that the residents of Sal are “satisfied” with the work that the mayor and his team have been carrying out on the island.
"There is a difference between governing to be well and governing to do good", observes the Bishop, congratulating the mayor Júlio Lopes for the courage to assume the management of the Municipality of Sal with a public service spirit, as he considered that this way of facing the mission is a “wealth” or a “gift” that will be rewarded, because, in the end, what remains is what has been done well and has positively influenced the residents or communities.
Despite being a courtesy visit, the President of the City Council made a point of discussing some pertinent issues with the Bishop, both in the interest of the City and the Church.
Dom Ildo Fortes was open and available to cooperate with the city of Salense, in different domains, whether in terms of promoting spirituality in people, education, public health, social action, among other areas.
