Pedra de Lume
The town of Pedra de Lume was founded in 1804 by Manuel António Martins, it is the oldest village on the island of Sal, composed of families of ex-salt workers, who still live in houses built at the time of the salt trade. .
The time passed but its initial architecture was practically the same, for that reason, that the locality is considered a historic center, with striking references such as the Chapel Nossa Senhora das Dores, built in the 19th century, old shacks, cable transportation facilities and a salt coin and bagging system in an advanced state of degradation.
Currently, the salt flats of Pedra de Lume are one of the main tourist attractions on the island.
Palmeira
Another ancient settlement on the island of Sal (recently upgraded to a village) is Palmeira, whose population lives mainly from fishing. It is believed that its name originated from the date plantations in Ribeira de Fontona, located south of the bay of Palmeira.
Currently, the village is considered one of the centers of industrial development, due to the institutions that produce electricity, drinking water on the island, as well as the port that, in addition to the traffic of goods, contributes to the insertion of Cape Verde in the system. world economic.
The locality is very pleasant and famous for the matinees dancing on weekends, traditional music in bars and restaurants that leaves those who visit it feeling of high satisfaction.
Espargos
Right in the center of the island, the City of Espargos is the largest city on the island of Sal, which gives it the title of center with important administrative activities.
The village was born with the support facilities for the Italian company LATI and its flights from Europe to South America.
Linked to airport activities, the city of Espargos has always grown and has become the area with the highest concentration of the Salense population.
Santa Maria
Around 1830, due to the exploitation and market of salt, the village of Santa Maria was born in the wide bay that constitutes the southern edge of the island. The village, today Cidade de Santa Maria, is one of the main if not the main tourist area of the island and of the country. During the year, it welcomes tourists from the most varied countries who, in search of tranquility and rest, fall in love with the extensive white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The city of Santa Maria is where most of the hotel infrastructure is concentrated, although there are deficiencies in terms of social and urban facilities.
