Pedra de Lume
Pedra de Lume - Founded in 1804 by Manuel António Martins, it is the oldest settlement on the island of Sal. Composed by families of former salt workers, who still live in houses built at the time of the salt trade. The locality has remained practically unchanged for the past fifty years, giving us the feeling of having stopped in time. The locality can be considered a historic center, as there is a chapel built in the 19th century, old shacks, cable transportation facilities and a coin and bagging system for salt in an advanced state of degradation. Currently, the salt flats of Pedra de Lume are one of the main tourist attractions on the island.
Palmeira
Another ancient settlement on the island of Sal (recently upgraded to a village) is Palmeira, whose population lives mainly from fishing. It is thought that its name originated from the date palms in Ribeira de Fontona, located south of the bay of Palmeira. Considered one of the centers of industrial development, Palmeira is currently the center for the production of electricity and drinking water on the island. In addition, the Port of Palmeira contributes to the insertion of Cape Verde in the world economic system. It is a very pleasant village that gives a lot of satisfaction to those who visit it.
Espargos
Right in the center of the island, the City of Espargos takes on the main administrative activities and constitutes the main commercial center of Sal. The town was born with the main support facilities for the Italian company LATI and its flights from Europe to South America. airport activities, Espargos has always been growing and becoming the area with the highest concentration of the Salense population
Santa Maria
Around 1830, and due to the exploitation and market of salt, the village of Santa Maria was born in the wide bay that constitutes the southern edge of the island. The village, today Cidade de Santa Maria, is one of the main if not the main tourist area of the island and of the country. During the year, it welcomes tourists from the most varied countries who, in search of tranquility and rest, fall in love with the extensive white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The city of Santa Maria is where most of the hotel infrastructure is concentrated, although there are deficiencies in terms of social and urban facilities.
