Discovered on December 3, 1460, the island of Sal was named Llana (flat), because of its unique relief, and after the discovery of two large salt pans, this name was replaced by the current one.

Of stunning beauty, with the largest beaches in Cape Verde, Sal is today one of the most sought after destinations for lovers of water sports such as windsurfing, diving, fishing, among others.


Located between the parallels 16o 35 ́ and 16o 51 ́ North and the meridians 22o 52 ́ and 23o 00 ́ West of Greenwich is of the islands of the Archipelago with smaller territorial dimension (216km2), formed by eruptive and sedimentary material, having a length of 30km, from Ponta Norte to Ponta do Sinó, in the south, and 12 km wide from Ponta do Rabo de Junco to Ponta do Ilhéu de Chano.

The island morphology is characterized by large flat surfaces whose monotony is altered by some mountainous reliefs of a punctual character, the highest point being Monte Grande, which is 406 m high.


The island, as well as the archipelago, is included in the region of sub-Saharan Africa, known as Sahel, characterized by arid climatic conditions, irregular rains, sparse and sparse vegetation and with an irrelevant hydrographic network. The fauna is composed of some species of birds, insects, reptiles, fish and turtles.
